No new problems with sound on the 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5.x86_64 kernel (I know, it's the 64-bit kernel, not your 32-bit one). I have other, older problems related to SeaMonkey 2.0a3, but that's not related.
That's a useful datapoint nonetheless, thanks! It's much better if it's limited to a specific piece of hardware or subset of hardware than to be widespread... even if it makes it harder to track down. ;o)
Curiosity killed the cat, so I went and looked at the config files in /boot for the latest 3 versions. No changes shown there for AC97 or 8111 stuff. So now it sounds like either a loadable module-related problem, either in the module itself or the modprobe conf. I wonder if some parameter change is needed.
