don't know if it is still the case but ext3 + 3ware + ext3 = ultra slow. you'd want to use XFS or some other filesystem...
I just put in some 9550SX's to replace some very crappy Adaptec 2810SA's and they seem to scream. Maybe the Adaptecs were even worse.
