hmmm... this is weird because i installed the same way i installed my
other servers i always enabled selinux. But this is the first time i
encountered this.

When I screwed up my /etc/sysconfig/selinux once I had similar problems.
I had selinux set to SELUNIX=enforcing and a bogus SELINUXTYPE=
it was not happy, not even in the least bit :)
putting in real (and even valid) entries in /etc/sysconfig/selinux fixed
my screwup :)
