Found a solution: As an alternative to PHP Exec on a web page running ImageMagick, now using GMagick (GraphicsMagick) in PHP to process images.
Can't explain the Exec failure but initially even PHP GMagick refused to save files on an external partition. After repeatedly resetting file and directory permissions, images are successfully saved.
Could you provide the version of php you are using: php-5.1.x or php53-5.3.x and an example of code ?
I'll try to reproduce it.
