That might be a nice option for a testing branch, but wouldn't implementing a 2.6 kernel option go against the Centos 3 objective of reimplementing RHEL 3?  Some of the 2.6 kernel enhancements have been backported in the Redhat EL kernel, if I understand correctly.  Check out:  https://www.redhat.com/apps/webform.html?event_type=whitepaper&eid=278
