you may want to use "--exclude=PATTERN". In this case the dir /dev

grep -R --exclude=/dev "some_term"

You might want to excluse /proc and /sys too (at least). I have seen more than 1 server crash due to ... how should I put it ... enthusiastic admins greping and/or tar'ing /proc.
