It just becomes messy when your zones are managed by different people and the targets of CNAMEs later are converted to CNAMEs themselves. You aren't supposed to do that, but it is common enough that everything follows them anyway.
I use multiple A records pointing to the same IP for that, I'll only use a CNAME to a host if I can't control that hosts IP address and/or won't be notified if its changed.
