you might just see if you can enable DMA with the hdparm command.

* signifies the current active mode
note the * mode. in my case, its udma2 which is fairly fast (I believe 66MB/sec). a modern hard drive should do udma3 or 4 (100 or 133Mhz).
try...
# hdma -Xudma3 /dev/hdb
