Ah, them I'm not alone....
Plug-cycling didn't work for me. I went through that with three different flash drives. Fdisk could see all of them, and I could mount all of them manually, but the automount never came back. I didn't think about rmmod and modprobe before I rebooted (I had to go to a meeting, so it was an opportune moment to reboot), but I'll save this for next time, if there is one.
