That's the _right_ place to use a CNAME. Unfortunately back in the days when we did everything manually a lot of us started using CNAME to avoid having to change IP#s in lots of places in our own zone files on those hopefully few occasions when we have to renumber.
But there is no down side to a CNAME as long as you remember that it really is an alias for the target name and thus inherits any other data (like MX records) associated with it.
