I apologize in advance for asking this question but... Are you certain that you did not edit / touch the /etc/rpm/platform file yourself?
Prior to my changing i386 to i686 as previously stated. Frankly, I was unaware of the contents of /etc/rpm as I hadn't had time. Sigh!
