Thanks - I thought the *ia* kernels were for Itaniums, not xeons. It does seem to work OK. However, up till now yum has not offered to update the kernel.
The updated yum fixes the ia32e not being recognised. http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=899
That was probably the reason.
