In the past I've used Apache with mod_dav and HTTP Auth over SSL to store the ICS files. Works okay with Thunderbird/Lightning. I'm now accessing my Google Calendar via Lightning which is okay for light use (updates are quite slow) and I don't have to maintain yet another server.
