Hi, adding acpi=ht on kernel boot works for me.
kernel 2.6.9-11.EL
title CentOS 4.0 (2.6.9-11.EL) root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-11.EL ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet acpi=ht initrd /initrd-2.6.9-11.EL.img

Which CentOS version? Which kernel version? Do you have CentOS or vanilla kernel? Latter case you should examine wheter you have the button function compiled into the kernel or not.
