I was able tou mount /dev/md0 so it must
have been that it was part of a RAID device.

You may need to try specifying a format when you mount it.

... -t ext3 ... for example.

I did:
mkdir /mnt/hda1
chmod 755 /mnt/hda1
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1

I get back:

mount: /dev/hda1 already mounted or /mnt/hda1 busy

I checked with df.  I don't see hda1 anywhere.

Any ideas what is wrong?
