btw I tried solaris: when its disk partitioning tool clobbered my partition table - it didn't seem to have a read-only mode - I didn't bother reinstalling it.

Ah, Solaris partitions. Got to love them :D

I guess you would say the same for the trixbox live cd...it will completely trash your disk and install itself :D
