Mozilla did not have this problem.

How can I continue to use the old mozilla?

Both for system updates and for new 4.4 installs.

I need the -remote functionality to not open new windows.

If you want new windows to appear as TABS you should be able to change the

browser.link.open_newwindow

in about:config tag to 3 to get a new tab.. or try 2 1 to see what they do :).
