http://www.karan.org/blog/index.php/2010/01/04/ has the process. There is a mirror check cycle, and it did go through for this specific update.
Also, is there some reason behind the package name/numbering going from: java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-1.21.b17.el5 to java-1.6.0-openjdk.x86_64 1:1.6.0.0-1.22.1.9.8.el5_6
not sure where you are looking, nothing from this end has changed.
