Always partition the disk, it makes life so much easier.

I prefer to partion as follows:

/ = 10 - 20GB

/home = 10 GB, unless your application will use this

/swap = 4GB

/var = 10GB - gives you enough space for plenty log files

Use LVM, which allows you to shrink & grow partitions on the fly.
