Hopefully Red Hat (and CentOS) will continue using Gnome 2.x.x for a while yet. I don't understand why you would want to take away the ability to customize. That's one of the main reasons I like Linux.
Most likely because of the increasing number of noobs that delete/remove parts of the panels and then whine helplessly for someone to help them revert it back to default state.
