Only if you want to get a system harder to maintain - using source builds on an RPM managed system is always sub-optimal. I encourage you to use the repository of http://www.jpackage.org. It has RPMs of Tomcat, mod_jk and the Java runtime environment as nosrc skeletons.
Totally, 100%, unabashedly AGREED.
Tomcat 5.5 support is in OpenNMS HEAD or should be really soon, I am testing on Centos 4.1 with java 5 and HEAD and loving the performance improvement.
If using jpackage I always need to install xerces-j2.
