and as it comes back up, hit a key to get the boot prompt, pick the kernel you want to boot, hit 'e', then select the kernel line and hit 'e' to edit and add 'single' to the end of the line, and 'b' to boot it.
Ahh, yes this was it.
A handy thing to remember.
