I agree with this, but I'm not sure how this would have gotten hosed up on a normal install.
How would I know? How would I fix it? When I use knoppix the /dev system is completely empty because it wasn't used to boot the system.
Have you made any manual changes to either /etc/inittab or /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit?
