I noticed on another e-mail that you already completed the transition, but I would like to comment for future reference.

Dear Hughes,
Thank you for your reply!
As you metioned I installed device driver when I installed RHEL 4.0 U1 by typing "linux dd" and inserting device driver CD according to X4100's installation manual.
Booting with "linux dd" only provides install time device driver support. It won't install the driver.
The meaining is even tho RHEL 4.0U1 doesn't support the device during install time (BOOT kernel), it does provide for regular operation (UP, SMP, hugemem etc kernels).
That means if you need to reinstall your X4100, you will need to first install RHEL4.0U1 or CentOS 4.1. But, after that, you should be able to upgrade to RHEL4.0U2 or CentOS 4.2 without any issues.
Best Regards,
