I downloaded ipw3945-linux-1.2.0 This told me do download ieee80211-1.2.16

the build directory is a symbolic link to /usr/src/kernels....
This directory is missing.
What yum command do I execute to get it?
You'll need to install the matching kernel-devel package for your kernel. I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine the appropriate command to do so.
