For the interest of all concerned:
The 32-bit version of Seamonkey works perfectly with the flash plugin. I haven't tested others yet, including the acrobat reader, but I have much more confidence that problems encountered there will be easily soluble.
Thanks to all who contributed, especially Jim Perrin, who gave me the critical clue as to what was not working.
