Why are you wanting to turn it off instead of fixing the underlying issue? Would seem more appropriate to allow the update server's through the firewall as opposed to stopping yum and leaving the server outdated.

+1 Excellent advice. He should not be disabling updates. Advice that's worth a lot more than 2 cents
