I see you've already done the appropriate thing, filed a ticket[1] against the EPEL package in Bugzilla.
Not much else you can do here. It's not part of CentOS, and is up to the EPEL maintainers to upgrade.
Actually, looking at the other tickets for MATE on EPEL, it looks like the maintainer doesn't want to upgrade for a variety of reasons:
