gsoc 2015 projects

Dear CentOS gsoc mentors, my name is Marios and I am a student from Greece. I participated in gsoc last year in LTTng project and I am interested in participating again this year in the CentOS project. I found the projects you proposed extremely interesting and I am really confused which one to choose to make my proposal for. So, I would like to ask some clarifying questions, which are groupped per project. I address my questions here but I am more than willing to talk with the equivalent mentors in IRC or mail. My questions are: * Centos cloud storage - Is glusterfs a prerequisite for the program? Is it possible to use another fs, eg CephFS, because I am familiar with the Ceph architecture, since I have partially worked with that. * Lightweight Cloud instance contextualisation tool Can I have some more details about this project especially as far as the lightwieght part is concerned. As I imagine this tool will not be CentOS specific, right? * Xen based Hypervisor in a Box According to the ideas page "the aim of this task is to build an installer instance". So, will the result be like a live CD where the user can try different CentOS versions, or a new instance that from the time is installed xen is running and several CentOS VMs can be initiated. * App to trim containers Is this project about docker containers or containers in general? Are there any specific ideas and tools in mind behind that project or it is more of a research project? * Cloud in a box Is there any prerequisite about the cloud software that should be used? There are a lot of choices eg OpenStack, oVirt, synnefo As you can understand from my questions I am more interested in cloud and virtualization projects and CentOS is among the few gsoc projects that offer me this chance. Develop a kpatch delivery mechanism

Hello again! I am not very familiar with technologies used in repos, thus I have some questions: 1) I would like to use nodejs to manage the repo. Is that possible? Or is there some other technology already used for doing that kind of job? (can't find it in google, I am ready to read about it, so please, attach a link to that if possible) 2) What exactly is hard about metafile? As far as I understood, there is already a format used by yum, and it already has quite some info we need to load the patches. Maybe we can employ it in its exact form + some alternations/additions? (https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Standards_Rpm_Metadata) - this will totally kill a need to write an own parser - it can be done by nearly copying yum's code for that, and will se something familiar for developers, which increases manageability. 3) I think CLI can be created by writing a yum plugin. Or is there some problems I do not know about with that? 4) What is used on the backend for managing repos? (I probably will need that experience when writing one for patches). 5) I am right now working on a starup, and I will have my exams in June, so I probably will start coding earlier, Hope that is not a problem :) PS. I wrote a message asking about "Extendable system hardening tool" earlier I am deciding between the two, and I would prefer the first one, but if that won't be possible, well - I am eager to contribute to this one, so I ask beforhand. Extendable system hardening tool

Good day there! My name is Vladislav Babkin, I am from Ukraine, and I want to contribute by helping developing this tool I have some questions: 1) Aren't sh scripts good enough to audit a policy? Well, we will need some additional tooling, like a tool to try and open a connection to a port, etc. 2) Should auditing tool be able to try and fix the problems? For example, if it connects to web-server as root - maybe it should connect to it and close that possibility (if the user adds a flag to do so)? 2) When ensuring a policy, should this tool autoinstall software as well if is not present, or should it just fail? 3) Should it work internally on the server, or can it be run somewhere on the outside with access to the machine through ssh or alike? 4) I am right now working on a starup (and will do so in summber), and I will have my exams in June, so I probably will start coding earlier, Hope that is not a problem :) I'm looking forward to hearing from you, Vladislav Babkin -- Sent from my mobile via Mail.Ru

Hi, I'm a fourth year student at IIIT Hyderabad, part of a dual degree program (B.Tech + MS in computer science). I'm looking for an exciting project to do this summer as part of GSoC. I am very interested in the project *yum plugin to handle docker /container images*. Also, I want to start contributing to CentOS in general. I have very good knowledge on Docker and containers. I had done an assignment as part of the cloud computing course in which we developed a simple PaaS framework using Docker. I have worked with dockerfiles and automation of docker commands. Hello , I' a 3rd year chinese student studying software engineering (real-time system and embedded system) in France. I've found the GSOC2015 idea 'App to trim containers ' very attractive and I would like to know more about it to prepare my proposal. After having read the introduction, I think the main purpose is clear. Analyse the dependencies of app and create a minimum contrainer for it instead of a full feature image (If I've got it right). In order to make my first step, I wonder how could I try it out, for I used to use other distributions. Any reference would also be a great help. I would like to try out the container and understand how it functions. Repository of Open Source GIS software for CentOS Open Source GIS software is going very strong, e.g. software under the umbrella of http://www.osgeo.org. Unfortunately, the packaging situation for CentOS is not that good. Could the idea of creating a repository of packages, like the one for Windows (http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo4w/wiki/PackageListing) be an acceptable proposal for GSOC? Hmm, hope we get this... I've been using Unix since around 1985 (SunOS) with a 10 year diversion into HPUX (9,10,11) before finding Linux around 1995. I started with RHL 4.2 and have been using it continuously since. I met Russ through our local LUG where I've presented on numerous topics. I've done IT in electronics manufacturing, healthcare, financials and general consulting. Since 2002 I've been employed by a large financial company as a senior engineer specializing in Linux. I'm currently the technical lead for the global Linux Engineering team. I've used CentOS since the first spin came out. My name is Michael and I live in North Augusta, SC USA. I work for Morris Communications, in Augusta, Georgia, under the Internet & Hosting Services division, handling all provisioning and support of RHEL and CentOS servers for our production and development environments. Currently our business runs several Linux servers on a number of HP Proliant G1 through G5 servers, including HP Blades as well. As needs arise, I am also the primary subject matter expert (SME) for Xen and CMS related issues in our multi-tiered environment. My desktop workstation: Intel P4 2.2Ghz (32-Bit), 2GB Ram, 250 GB HD running CentOS 5.2 host running 3 Xen CentOS 5.2 environments, running a 2-node MySQL 5.0 Cluster instance. Hi everyone, I am satish from India, I am a 3 year undergrad student pursuing my graduation in Computer Science and Engineering at a college in India. I use Centos ( along with Fedora) as my primary OS, and I keep using it for various tasks such as working on Drupal code ( on a local web server), programming some applications and all kind of stuff. Well I guess my skills are not enough to do some really front-end work with the Gsoc projects, but I really like the work the Centos team does, and would like to provide as much help as possible from my side.
