CentOS 7 EOL and end of (legacy) mirror network

Hi all As reflected some time ago on the ticket tracker, we weren't adding any 'legacy' mirror to mirrolist.centos.org (nor mirror-status.centos.org) as content moved to different mirror network , starting from CentOS Sream 9 (mirror.centos.org vs mirror.stream.centos.org) As you know, that means that there was a different ticket for Stream 9 (and now 10) content, and interested mirror admin[s] needed to self-register their stream mirror on mirrormanager.fedoraproject.org and then create specific ticket on infra tracker to ask ACL to be modified (https://pagure.io/centos-infra/new_issue/?template=mirror-request) CentOS Stream 8 went EOL last month and CentOS Linux 7 itself will be EOL end of June, meaning that all content from mirror.centos.org will also disappear. Same for mirrorlist.centos.org service, as not used anymore for any supported centos version (stream 9 and 10 are served from Fedora mirrormanager infra) That means that all mirrors entered into (legacy now) mirror crawler (and reflected on https://mirror-status.centos.org) will not be verified/crawled anymore either. Worth knowing that for some time the msync.centos.org::CentOS rsync service will continue to be available but all content will be removed (automatically cleaning up disk space on downstream mirrors too) Thanks a lot for having been part of the successful mirror network since the beginning of the project ! Adding ACL for rsync.stream.centos.org (like we always did for msync.centos.org)

Just this little mail to announce that we have now put in place the same mechanism to only allow registered third-party mirrors to pull/rsync from us. (ticket https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issue/999) Due to lack of bandwidth/resources and also sponsored nodes disappearing (and so remaining sponsored infra being overloaded with requests), we had to adapt the process to also have ACL in place for CentOS Stream 9 (as it was already documented for years on https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/CreatePublicMirrors) to only allow ip address[es] (ipv4 and ipv6) from these registered mirrors (https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issues?status=Closed&tags=mirrormanager&clos…) Should you suddenly be blocked (because you are now using a different ip that differs from the one you added in your initial ticket on centos-infra tracker), feel free to create ticket to request the ip to be updated in our ACL. Spring Clean-up (aka removing dead mirrors from crawler/lists)

Hi all, When having a look at https://mirror-status.centos.org, I saw that we had quite some mirrors that don't seem to be monitored (despite previous mail sent to PoC) and in bad shape (not reachable or really outdated). Those mirrors are automatically removed from yum/dnf produced lists, but still eats time at the crawler process level when trying to validate/reach out those mirrors. For that reason, I so disabled those mirrors in our DB and such nodes are so gone from https://mirror-status.centos.org/ (which is so now in "good shape") In case your mirror would be impacted (but weren't paying attention to previous mails nor your own monitoring for your pull script), you can still reply on the centos-mirror list *after* you have verified what was wrong and how you fixed it. Deprecating previous eu-msync/us-msync A/AAAA records

Hi, While we already implemented that change a long time ago, it seems that (based on discussions I had with Anssi), some people are still using eu-msync.centos.org or us-msync.centos.org as hostnames in their scripts (and sometimes using one as fall back of the other one) That doesn't make sense anymore as those records were switched some time ago to be CNAME of just msync.centos.org : dig +short +noshort eu-msync.centos.org eu-msync.centos.org. 600 IN CNAME msync.centos.org. dig +short +noshort us-msync.centos.org us-msync.centos.org. 600 IN CNAME msync.centos.org. msync.centos.org is itself delegated to our PDNS setup, using GeoIP, that will answer A/AAAA record (from a validated list of nodes in the msync pool) based on your location. CentOS 6.8 release and mirror status

Hi Mirrors Admins, As you probably know, CentOS 6.8 is now built. So expect to see some traffic when it will be released - very soon - (when the whole tree/isos will land on your mirror, and when people will then start downloading/rsyncing from your mirror). Just to let you know also that expected size is ~31Gb. After some time we'll remove the 6.7 folder and will archive it to vault.centos.org, so you'll get back that space. [infra] : availability of msync.centos.org over IPv6 (please read)

Dear Mirrors Admins, Recently we worked with the various sponsors hosting nodes for our msync network, and we were able to have enough IPv6 connectivity to publicly announce the availability of msync.centos.oorg over IPv6. Actually we have ~50% ipv6 coverage in the msync network to open it up to you. What does that mean ? if you have native ipv6 connectivity, you'll be able to automatically sync from us over ipv6 instead of ipv4, using the same rsync url ( msync.centos.org::CentOS/ - see https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/CreatePublicMirrors) We decided to make it transparent, so we just added AAAA record[s] in our GeoIP pdns backend for msync.centos.org. Worth knowing that we're still using the same rsync target as before, and so also doing IP check for incoming connections (see initial announce mail for this : https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-mirror-announce/2014-June/000015.…) This so remains in place but we'll add ipv6 addresses in the same ACL (already working and confirmed by some testers on the centos-mirror list,or #centos-mirror) What do you have to do ? normally nothing as if you advertise AAAA record for your public mirror, we have added it in the ACL already (and instead of just adding it, we added the whole /48 subnet around it, in case you're using a different IPv6 address for the outgoing connection) What if it doesn't work anymore ? feel free to answer to that thread (on the centos-mirror list only, not on the moderated centos-mirror-announce list) or reach us in #centos-mirror on irc.freenode.net and we'll verify your IPv6 address/subnet block in the ACL. CentOS-6.7 RPMs and drpms added to 6.6/cr

I have just pushed the RPMs and drpms to 6.6/cr/ repo. In 45 or so minutes, all the msync mirrors should have content. I will push the repodata tomorrow at around 1000 UTC. This should allow a better experience for users as external mirrors can get the repodata tomorrow much faster than the whole set. The package set is about 7GB. Thanks, Johnny Hughes

Disk usage statistics for the (upcoming) 7 release

So, depending on when your mirror will start his following rsync cron job, you'll probably have to rsync ~21Gb of additional data. Our GeoIP dns redirector will redirect you to your nearest (or nearby) msync node, but depending on network speed/time of the day (if some other mirrors are syncing at the same time as you, etc ) you'll be able to fetch it directly or you'll have to wait a little bit. Important notification for the (upcoming) 7 release.

Hi Mirrors Admin, Karanbir and myself had a conversation about CentOS 7 and external mirrors and here are some points we'd like to report: First, we'd like to say thank you for the CentOS Mirror you actually provide for all CentOS users all around the world. Second point I wanted to mention is the fact that CentOS 7 is slowly approaching. What does that mean for you ? Don't be surprized if in the following days/week(s), your CentOS mirror will start consuming more disk space and bandwidth. We have currently no fixed disk space usage stats for 7, but we expect it to be ~40Gb (os/updates/iso images) and that will grow with new updates being released when they'll appear. Keep in mind that that will be for i386/x86_64 and we just plan on releasing x86_64 now, i386 being a community effort, and considered secondary arch (so building in parallel but we'll release x86_64 even if there is no i386 build "ready") To better serve you, we'll start implementing the following changes in the next 24 hours : - we'll restrict the CentOS (and - legacy but pointing to the same path - CentOS-incdvd) rsyncd modules access to IP currently being marked as "official" CentOS public mirrors - That means that we'll currently stop adding new mirrors until Seven is out - That also means that if you're using a different outgoing IP address than the reverse ip lookup for your mirror(s), you'll be blocked (if that's the case, contact us on the centos-mirror list and we'll fix that ) Can we also remind you (http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/CreatePublicMirrors) that : * if your mirror is located in the .us, you're encouraged to use the us-msync.centos.org::CentOS host/rsync module * if your mirror is located somewhere in Europe, you're encourage to use the eu-msync.centos.org::CentOS host/rsync module * Mirror out of the .us/.eu scope can use the generic msync.centos.org::CentOS host/rsync module (multiple nodes using GeoIP to redirect to the nearby country/host) We count on you for a successful CentOS 7 release, and would like to thank you once again. 6.1 tree to the msync and msync-dvd server

I am going to release the 6.1 tree to the msync machines (eu-msync.centos.org, us-msync.centos.org, msync.centos.org) as well as msync-dvd.centos.org Both the msync machines and the msync-dvd machines have geoip capability, so they will pick a machine that is on or close to your continent for syncing. The targets are "rsync <your_options> msync.centos.org::CentOS/" (or eu-msync, us-msync if you prefer ... though the system should give you the correct one with just msync as well) ... OR ... "rsync <your_options> msync-dvd.centos.org::CentOS-incdvd/". The msync-dvd machines will require that your mirror has been added to the list to be authorized. I will monitor the centos-mirrors list and try to add anyone who is not on there that wants to be ... BUT, for 6.1, there is no difference in the trees. The msync tree and the msync-dvd trees both have the DVDs in the tree. Initially, while we get the tree pushed, I am going to have the permissions on the 6.1 directory set to 700 ... this is to prevent access on our mirrors while we get some external machines synced. I will, after we get several dozen external mirrors synced, flip the permissions to 755 and a subsequent rsync by you will also change your permissions. Obviously, you control your external servers and you can offer the tree early after you get it in place ... but remember that our mirror list generator will show your trees as active as it finds them, so you may get significant traffic if you open your tree early (before other machines get online). DVDs again

Hi, I just added everyone who got access to the DVDs now and wasn't listed on www.centos.org as carrying the DVDs to our database. So your mirror should be listed there in a few hours as having the DVDs. I noticed that a few mirrors which requested access don't carry the DVDs yet. Give me a shout once you're done, I'll add you then. Remember that you need to change your rsync scripts, use msync-dvd.centos.org as the server to pull from, the target is CentOS-incdvd - as in /usr/bin/rsync -aqzH --delete --delay-updates msync-dvd.centos.org::CentOS-incdvd halifax.rwth-aachen mirror.ircam.ft eznetsols.org netnitco.net ftp.ines.lug.ro don't have them yet (I hope I didn't forget anyone). DVD access now going live

Hi, I just "injected" the new acls into our config management system. This means that the acls should be on our mirrors in the next few hours. So how to get the DVDs now? For rsync, use msync-dvd.centos.org as the server to pull from, the target is CentOS-incdvd - as in /usr/bin/rsync -aqzH --delete --delay-updates msync-dvd.centos.org::CentOS-incdvd for example. You'll get a mirror reasonably close to you to pull from with that. If you're not directly able to access the dvd, wait at least until tomorrow evening before making some noise - the config change should go out rather fast, but with some machines being rather remote, puppet sometimes takes two or three tries to pull through. After that (or if you cannot get the dvd at all, although you sent me your IP address), please do make some noise, as I might have mistyped something or plainly forgot you (this shouldn't have happened). I'll update our mirror database over the weekend, so your mirror won't show as carrying dvds before that on our mirrorlist. Cheers, Ralph
