RFC email for late/lagging CentOS public mirrors

Hello everyone, First, let me thank you all for providing a public CentOS mirror. There are now over 170 sites registered :D I would like your feedback on the proper way to warn the public mirrors monitored at http://mirror-status.centos.org/ that something is going wrong. I was thinking of: 1st email inquiry : "what's up?" - timestamp > 3 days late or server not responding for > 3 days 2nd email inquiry : "what's wrong?" - timestamp > 7 days late or server not responding for > 7 days If no news after the 2nd inquiry, remove the server from the list after another grace delay of 7 days. Of course that the general idea, there can be lots of good reason to have a late/lagging mirror. We can just also remove the server from the mirrorlist (most visible annoyance from a lamda user perspective, imho). md5sum mismatch from some mirrors

Hi all, hope this is on-topic for the list. I'm getting md5 sum mismatch errors on a few RPM's I've retrieved from the icann.org mirror for CentOS 5.1. Specifically the following RPM's: glibc-2.5.18.el5_1.1.x86_64.rpm glibc-common-2.5-18.el5_1.1.x86_64.rpm samba-3.0.25b-1.el5_1.2.x86_64.rpm Note that the above files were copied from ICANN's rsync mirror. The glibc RPM has the following md5sum: e3614bd667f56beb93c329aec4abd3cc glibc-2.5-18.el5_1.1.x86_64.rpm It gives the following error when I try to isntall it: # rpm -Uvh glibc-2.5-18.el5_1.1.x86_64.rpm --force warning: glibc-2.5-18.el5_1.1.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e8562897 Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:glibc ########################################### [100%] error: unpacking of archive failed on file /lib64/libnss_files-2.5.so;475995a5: cpio: MD5 sum mismatch However, if I download the file from ICANN's http mirror directly: 19475c95f319da26d84e8bf9e63c9041 glibc-2.5-18.el5_1.1.x86_64.rpm It installs fine with no complaints. Both files have identical file sizes at 4891593. Is this likely a side-effect of an rsync error on my end? I did install the "bad" RPM above with --nomd5 and it began causing segmentation faults until I reverted to the "good" one. I will remove the files in question and re-rsync, but as this has happened several times before I'm wondering if it's a common thing. Thanks, Ray

Hello, I have removed quite a few old mirrors which used to carry a public CentOS access but were lagging by more than 30 days. How do you know when you've reached 50% if those sites have perms set to 700? Or what is the definition of 'external mirrors' here? Or maybe the assumption is that CentOS mirrors who have already synced set the permissions to 775, and temporarily disable syncing of 5.1? -ps

5.1 released to mirrors

All, CentOS-5.1 is released to the public mirrors (msync and mysnc-dvd). We currently have the top directory (5.1) set to 700 permissions. This should allow you to download as your "rsync" user now, but it will probably not be browseable on your web/ftp server. We will change the permissions to 775 on the 5.1 directory as we get more than 50% of the external mirrors with the 5.1 tree completed. We are doing it this way on purpose to allow the syncs to finish BEFORE people start hitting the public mirrors for yum updates. Also note that we are syncing out with 15 total mirrors, BUT there are more than 300 mirrors that sync from these ... so it might be slow going for the first couple days. Also, if any of you can spare EXTRA bandwidth on top of your public mirrors, you could take a copy of the .torrent files from the 5.1/isos/ directories and seed the ISOs for bittorrent as well.
