Ideas on steering yum to local mirrors

Does anyone have any ideas on how to steer mirror traffic to your own mirrors without logging into the boxes? We have two public mirrors (one in each of our DCs) and would love to reduce the load on external mirrors, but manually changing the settings of tons of production boxes (many of which we don't even have access to) is not really an option. Most/all of the boxes have the default yum config (fastestmirror plugin). Any ideas are welcome. -- Randy M. www.FastServ.com

Thoughts on DVD images

Hi all: I've been following the whole DVD iso access questions and such for a while, and while talking to some people on #centos-mirror during the 5.5 push, some thoughts occurred to me. Presently, it is my understanding that there are two different repos maintained: ones with dvd images, and ones without. This seems needlessly painful and wasteful of the time and resources of our dedicated Centos volunteer administrators. I understand at least some of the reasons it exists: there are some mirrors that don't have the space for the DVDs or for other reasons wish not to carry them. However, times are changing, and I think that many, if not most, centos mirror operators would prefer to carry the DVD isos. In fact, I'd almost expect future major releases of CentOS (6+) to distribute DVD isos instead of the CD disk 1 of xx isos. So, I propose that the dvd-less mirror system is eliminated (all msync mirrors carry DVDs). No special ACLs either... Its easy to add a --exclude "*DVD*" to the rsync line for those that wish to not carry the DVDs. I also think that with sufficient announcement and time (say 1-3 months), this shouldn't be an issue. My understanding is that officially its required for anyone who operates a CentOS mirror to be subscribed to this list, and thus they should receive the announcement. In addition, a note can be added to the msync MOTD conveying this. If others have problems, I think the CentOS team would have done their due diligence; the fault would rest with those not paying attention to lists. After all, all things change and evolve, and I think this is a natural evolution for the CentOS mirror team. --Jim Administrator, centos.eecs.wsu.edu.

Hey Everyone, Just thought I'd share a graph I made up which shows the relative size on disk of what kernel.org has. http://userweb.kernel.org/~warthog9/wall-o-shame/mirrors.all.oct.1.2010.pre… I'm going to try and update it every so often (new graphs will be in that wall-o-shame directory). Just figured it's some interesting data, and I must say I'm actually quite impressed with CentOS' judicious use of disk space. Netriplex Mirror IP Update

Starting Monday, the IP for the Netriplex CentOS mirror will be changing (New hardware). The existing machine and IP will remain up for a few weeks to ensure everything goes smoothly. The DNS entry (centos.mirror.netriplex.com) will stay, and point to the new IP as soon as DNS updates on Monday. The new IP for the mirror is: 66.219.25.35 and rsyncs will be pulling from 66.219.25.34. Uplink stays the same at 1gig, as does http/ftp/rsync access, and DVDs (pulled 6x/day from kernel.org) -- Douglas A. Rsync mirror 209.40.98.35 not responding

I usually sync with mirror from the rsync server 209.40.98.35, but from september 30th I was unable to sync from that server. Rsync shows this error: rsync: failed to connect to msync.centos.org: Connection timed out (110) rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(107) [receiver=2.6.8] Also ping is not responding: ping 209.40.98.35 PING 209.40.98.35 (209.40.98.35) 56(84) bytes of data. --- 209.40.98.35 ping statistics --- 367 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 366078ms Does any reported problem with that rsync server ? Use of centos-mirror-announce list

Hello, While I believe that the centos-mirror mailing list offers extremely valuable support to people running public mirrors, for those of us that run private mirrors, it seems that many of the discussions are less-than-relevant. It would be useful if we could get some announcement-only information (new release updates, expiration of old versions from anywhere but vault, and such) posted to a different mailing list, so that we can cut through some of the noise and just get information relevant to announcement and mirror updates. I noticed there is a centos-mirror-announce list that seems to serve this purpose, but there have been no posts on it since February. Is there any way to have just announcement-related messages use the centos-mirror-announce list, or is there a different list that should be used? Thanks, --adam
