Would it be good to be able to serve the same number of users
while reducing resource consumption, including bandwidth, by 70%?
Let's get rid of some of the noise in the data and compare just
DVD versus CD. Using the NetNITCO data let's look at only the
most rcent release, 5.6, and for less noise let's look at
the most popular CPU, i386:
65 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-bin-DVD.iso
25 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-bin-1of7.iso
20 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-netinstall.iso
16 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-bin-5of7.iso
13 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-bin-4of7.iso
13 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-bin-2of7.iso
12 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-bin-3of7.iso
9 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-bin-7of7.iso
9 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-bin-6of7.iso
5 /5.6/isos/i386/CentOS-5.6-i386-LiveCD.iso
CD 1 is downloaded 38% percent as often as the DVD -
a significant amount. So people seem to want CDs a good
portion of the time. Also interesting is that CD 6 and 7
are downloaded about 1/3rd as much as CD 1. It looks like
a lot of people are like me in that they do installations
with only the first CD or two and don't need to download
all 4 GB.
That's a 70% reduction in bandwidth, time, disk io on the
mirrors when they get CD #1 & #2 instead of the full DVD.
Every user who is served by downloading only 2 CDs totalling
1.2 GB instead of 4 GB is good for the mirrors, good for
the network, and good for the users. If they are forced to
download the DVD instead, that means they use three times
the resources that they currently do.
I don't currently run a mirror because I don't have quite
enough bandwidth available, but if I were running a mirror
I'd rather serve up 1.2 GB to each of those users than 4 GB.

Special thanks to Ralph for sorting this out so promptly. I was using
the incorrect "from" address when sending to the list.

Good day
Web Africa, AS36943, is an ISP within South Africa. As part of our
projects to improve network efficiency we want our datacentre and ADSL
customers as well as our own CentOS servers to use our mirror
automatically. We're happy having anyone outside our network download
from our server.
Per http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/CreatePublicMirrors we believe we have
satisfied all conditions to have our ftp server listed as an official
mirror.
Server Mirror URLs: ftp://ftp.wa.co.za/pub/centos/ ;
http://ftp.wa.co.za/pub/centos/
Server Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Server link speed: Gbps
Server Sync reiteration: Sync starts every 4 hours unless the previous
sync (however unlikely) is still running
We're currently syncing from eu-msync.centos.org as we're not aware of
any closer official rsync server.
Please let us know on the above.
Thank you.

May I know your location?
Site name:Information&Netorking Associoation
Site connection:http://www.tju.edu.cn/
URL: http://mirror.tju.edu.cn/
ftp://mirror.tju.edu.cn/
Location: Tianjin, China
Speed: 1 Gbps
Sync: 4 times a day
Contact: licheng(a)tju.edu.cn
Please add it to the public mirror list, thanks.
At least two or the mirrors in msync-dvd.centos.org (centosh5 and centosr4)
have timestamp files that are four days old.
After a successful rsync i have:
# ls -la timestamp.txt TIME
-rw-r--r-- 1 mirror mirror 11 May 23 21:50 TIME
-rw-r--r-- 1 mirror mirror 29 May 23 21:50 timestamp.txt
# cat timestamp.txt
Mon May 23 19:51:01 UTC 2011
# cat TIME
1306180261
#

This is the comand i puted in cron jobs (CPANEL): rsync -aqzH --delete
eu-msync.centos.org::CentOS /home/oszbuy/public_html/CENTOS/
And i puted that it will work every day This is good?
CPANEL did this: urrent Cron Jobs
Minute0Hour0Day*Month*Week*day* rsync -aqzH --delete
eu-msync.centos.org::CentOS /home/oszbuy/public_html/CENTOS/

Hi,
I just "injected" the new acls into our config management system. This
means that the acls should be on our mirrors in the next few hours.
So how to get the DVDs now? For rsync, use msync-dvd.centos.org as the
server to pull from, the target is CentOS-incdvd - as in
/usr/bin/rsync -aqzH --delete --delay-updates msync-dvd.centos.org::CentOS-incdvd
for example. You'll get a mirror reasonably close to you to pull from
with that.
If you're not directly able to access the dvd, wait at least until
tomorrow evening before making some noise - the config change should go
out rather fast, but with some machines being rather remote, puppet
sometimes takes two or three tries to pull through.
After that (or if you cannot get the dvd at all, although you sent me
your IP address), please do make some noise, as I might have mistyped
something or plainly forgot you (this shouldn't have happened).
I'll update our mirror database over the weekend, so your mirror won't
show as carrying dvds before that on our mirrorlist.
Cheers,
Ralph
