Mirror Size

I want to add CENTOS to the list of software that we mirror at Argonne National Laboratory: http://mirror.anl.gov/ I've looked through the mirror pages (http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=22) but was unable to find information on the size of a full mirror. A new Centos mirror at nic.funet.fi

Hi, I've set up a new centos mirror at the nic.funet.fi alias ftp.funet.fi (ftp.funet.fi is the server from where Linux was launched 17.9.1991 making us the oldest linux distribution server I guess) during this summer (holidays slowed finalizing it a bit...). In July there seemed to be most times I tried manually problems getting any response from the msync servers, now it seems to be doing OK. HTTP.: http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/mirrors/centos.org/ FTP..: ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/mirrors/centos.org/ Rsync: rsync://rsync.nic.funet.fi/pub/mirrors/centos.org/ (BitTorrent is currently under testing, I'm interested in comparing it's performance and statistics with FTP if anyone has those to share. I've been experimenting with PermaSeed but that requires using the Osprey tracker so unless you're using it I'd have to generate separate torrent files or try some other approach.) Version..............: All (I use the rsync settings recommended in the Mirror HOWTO which I guess equals All) Architectures........: All Direct DVD Downloads.: Yes please, but it seems I'd need first access to my-dvd.centos.org::CentOS-incdvd to make it happen. Could that be arranged? Other mirrors could rsync from us too as long as we are not the only source. I'd hope the 2GB limit will gradually disappear... It's practically the same bits as in the set of CDs so if most sites supported DVDs I'd suppose the load would not rise much (rsync, pureftpd, http 2.2.x and Solaris 10 at least seems to be working combination). Preference for mirrors is for nearby (low latency) sites, european late night (but do sync more often if you need to) and the academic community in case we'd need to be preferential someday... Our primary target audience is the finnish academic and research community to which we'll always give preference and best latency. Please let us know if and when you mirror us regularly and you might someday get better service or service break announcements. The GeoIP mapping sounds interesting. We currently provide at least Fedora and Ubuntu DVD:s without major problems to everyone.. Synchronised..: 4 times/day (23 22,3,8,17 * * * currently, but could change) Location......: Finland, EU Bandwidth cap.: 1 Gbit/s (It's a NIC-dedicated network connected on a Juniper router that's connected to the Funet backbone which in turn is connected to NORDunet, Geant, Internet2, FICIX etc. with many gigabits) In practice the speed one gets depends on latencies, number of users and how well the 16GB memory can buffer the files). instability of msync.centos.org::CentOS (4.4 dir)

Hi there, Recently I notified that the CentOS 4.4 directory appeared and disappeared periodically in our mirror server (ftp.riken.jp). After the investigation, I notified that at the CentOS Rsync Master server msync.centos.org::CentOS the 4.4 directory seems to be disappeared sometimes in rsync connection. Since we are mirroring CentOS archives from msync.centos.org::CentOS using "rsync -aqzH --delete" options, when the 4.4 directly cannot be found at msync.centos.org::CentOS at the rsync mirror period, all the 4.4 archives mirrored so far are deleted immediately. And then in the next time when the 4.4 directory is found at msync.centos.org::CentOS, the rsyncing of 4.4 starts from the beginning. This repetition seems to raise the overload of the centos rsync master server (msync.centos.org) For the temporary solution, I have removed --delete option in rsync command and switched the rsync server to us-msync server. CentOS-4 to the mirrors

Politics

The mirror monitor at http://mirror-status.centos.org/ says "taiwan, province of china". For those in politics, this might be correct or wrong, depending on which side they stand on. The common name of the island however, used universally except perhaps in ROC, is plainly "Taiwan". Saying "Taiwan" does not imply any siding with either political stance, while adding "province of china" certainly does. So I wonder, what's the background to this odd naming? Did CentOS receive a nastigram from the Chinese ambassador? Did the ROC mirrors impose conditions for mirroring? Was it just an accident at work? Or did CentOS make a conscious decision to solve a 60-year old problem over the heads of those affected by it? Z

Release for 3.8 and 4.4 coming soon

Hi guys, just a heads up - 3.8 is going to be out in the next few days, followed by 4.4 shortly after! the usual process will stay in place, for a few days - there will be 3.7 + 3.8 out there, then 3.7 will go away. same with 4.3 and 4.4, a few days after 4.4 is released, 4.3 will go away and the symlinks change accordingly. our usual plan is to drop the older release around 14 days after the new one has gone out ( to make sure all mirrors are sync'd and most users are able to do any repo movement they need. init doesn't work after upgrade

Hello, this morning I started an upgrade process on my server CentOS 4.2 (Command: yum -y upgrade). Unfortunately after a little time, a black-out happened and I don't know if the installation was completed. The restart of the machine started automatically, and appeared an error similar to the following: mount: error 22 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 kernel panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init After a quarter of hour, I rebooted the server, but now the init doesn't start up many processes, like sshd, and I'm not able to login. How can I solve my problem? Have I use an other distro to enter? Or do I need to reinstall the system avoiding formatting any partitions? Service hiccup

We had a slight problem with http://mirror.cs.vt.edu/ overnight (US night). We moved the rack, and when the server came back up, the apache server didn't start. It's up and running now; will it automatically be added back into the list?
