So, I have a few questions about the future of the CentOS mirror network since the release of 5.4 is soon.
Is there any possibility that the rsync master pool will eventually have a direct link to the Internet2 Network? If not, is there any way for a mirror (like mirror.clarkson.edu) to avoid the delay in syncing new releases like 5.4 prior to the bitflip?
I'm asking this because the Clarkson mirror was unable to sync the release of 4.8 prior to the bitflip occurring since we are forced to sync with a mirror that is on the Internet2 Network. I would prefer to avoid delays in being able to serve new releases, if possible.
Thanks for any help you can provide, Matt

If interested, you can pick the mirror from our site ESnet ( http://linux.mirrors.es.net) which mirrors directly with Centos master and also has access to I2.
Cheers, Roberto

Roberto,
Thanks for your offer but I don't think it will fix the issue that our mirror is experiencing since I believe it is related to the permissions on the new directories prior to a new official release.
Below is a what I saw prior to the release of 4.8 back in August.
rsync: opendir "/4.8" (in centos) failed: Permission denied (13) rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1505) [generator=3.0.6]

True. I checked the logs for our system and centos has been mirroring error free from msync.CentOS.org rsync service (centosk3) for a very long time. Our last sync was with msync-dvd.centos.org at Tue Oct 13 19:01:04 PDT 2009. Do not know if the host info is of any help.

It looks like David Richardson is going to solve my issue but thanks for looking into it Roberto.

I may have a solution for you.
I have setup a second machine at the University of Utah. I have the full CentOS tree, including the DVD images, from the CentOS masters. I have lots of bandwidth available, especially on the research networks (Internet2 and NLR).
This second box is intended for other public mirrors (it only hosts CentOS so far), not end-users. Therefore, it is rsync only, and only by prior arrangement (I'll open it to any listed tier one CentOS mirror that asks).
I have also configured it to allow you to get the contents before the bitflip.
While not an official centos.org service, I think this would meet your desires.

That would be great and is exactly what I'm looking for. Currently, our mirror syncs with RIT due to them being located on the I2 and on the NYSERNet network; however, I don't think it would be too much slower for us to pull from your mirror in Utah since your on the I2 and we only have 15 Mbps on the I2 available to our mirror anyways. Hopefully, we will eventually be able to sync with the master pool... once leasing fiber to such remote locations goes down in price. :)
Any chance you can allow the Clarkson mirror (128.153.145.19) to sync with your host? Also, what is the new host I should adjust my rsync scripts to sync with and how often do you update it?
Let me know if you need to know anything else about our host.
Thanks, Matt
