Hello There,
Just a quick question,
How are mirrors selected? We have our public mirror which is at under 1ms away from client servers, however CentOS seems to be choosing CogentCO's mirror at 5ms, just curious is all!
Thanks,
Just giving my 2 cents here
Did you clear the fastestmirror cache since your mirror went up? It's possible that it just still thinks cogentco's mirror is closer. Try yum clean all and see what happens

Hello, Time to time we see same issues. Yum clean all and then fastest mirror goes back to our mirror server. At first i thought that there is some problems with mirror, but for epel or openvz mirror always selects our local mirror as fastest, but centos base and update repos not...

When I raised the issue of mirror distribution several months ago, it was identified that the main reason you don't always land at your mirror is because the CentOS mirror distribution is based on a number of "random" aspects. From memory it was a combination of latency + round robin. As a result, you should land at your mirror most (but not all) of the time.
You would see the likes of epel always land at your mirror because they use Mirror Manager (My assumption here being that you have told them your IP ranges so your client IP's are always told to go to your mirror, unless it is outdated).
There were plans to move CentOS mirrors to mirror manager but I am not sure how far away this was.

Good Morning, What we have seen is that when you do a yum clean all, the next time it needs a mirror, it gets a list of mirrors and then fastestmirror picks from that list. Unfortunately, the list that it pulls is a partial list and your local mirror may not be on it. So while Fedora uses some logic to return local mirrors (based on AS number) the CentOS list seems to be random. So far, I have never actually hit our mirror with a yum command even though from the logs I can see external entities hitting it all the time. It would be nice if there was more logic in the mirror selection process, but Fedora is really the best. For every other distribution we mirror, it is pretty much random if you will hit the local mirror.
We initially installed our mirror to reduce internet traffic and speed up updates for our students, but with the exception of Fedora, it really hasn't helped. Where possible, we try to direct our students to download directly from it when they need ISOs, but outside of the School of Engineering and Computational Sciences, not may people know about the mirror.

We've seen the same behavior. It seems like the only option right now is to manually override the mirror url, but that also means you don't get any fallback onto public mirrors if your mirror is down for some reason (you also have to convince the users to do it).
The most recent talk I can find about implementing mirrormanager is back in 2011, so I'm guessing that's not actually coming soon anymore? It would definitely be nice to be able to direct all our clients to our local mirror.

The verbose option in the fastestmirror config? That's not really going to help, ultimately the problem comes down to the fact that mirrors do not consistently show up in http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=6&arch=i386&repo=os . We've noticed that when our mirror is available in that list, that clients choose it all the time. When it's not in that list, fastestmirror can't possibly choose it.
Really, the only solution would seem to use MirrorManager. Or, at the very least implement some type of GeoIP system for choosing what mirrors to return to a client. I just checked, and and I'm getting mirrors from Alaska and Hawaii even though I'm in New Jersey..
Does anyone know the status of MirrorManager? Is that still something that's being worked on, or has it been shelved?
