I have noticed over the last few weeks that my rsync connection to us-msync.centos.org has failed to connect every once and a while. I started tracking which IPs it is trying to connect to, and this one server seem to be the culprit. Listed below is the IP and error message.
us-msync.centos.org: 209.40.98.35 rsync: failed to connect to us-msync.centos.org: Connection timed out (110) rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(107) [receiver=2.6.8]
Let me know if you need anymore information.

us-msync.centos.org: 209.40.98.35
that's centosu.centos.org
we have some connection issue between that machine and the rest of our pool of server... We haven't figured out why nor who is the culprit.
I will probably remove it from the current centos.org pool to avoid it until we clear out the problem.
Let me know if you need anymore information.
Thanks for the head-up.

yes, it seems to randomly lost connections (uptime 476 days).
I am rebooting it now, and to the latest kernel versions and we will see soon if it clears the issue. Otherwise I will remove it from the msync list.
Thanks

nowadays we and i believe many other ppl are using VPS as mirrors. But there is a little problem with fastest mirror plugin. OpenVZ delays first ping to 100-300ms, all other pings are ok, so average is quite a big, and fastest mirror plugin selects mirror incorrectly.
i propose to skip 2-3 maximum ping results and then average to determine best mirror. This will prevent selecting wrong mirror if mirror sits on OpenVZ VPS.
Any opinions? --- Regards, Pavelas Sokolovas BST:.LT - The Information Company
I don't agree with this proposed "nasty-tweak" (tm), as it breaks completelly the whole scope of the fastestmirror app.

there are no centos mirrors running from vps's that I know of. Certainly none of the .centos.org machines are vps's/
Also, fastestmirror does not use 'ping' to determine the mirror speed.

Tru,
I received this this morning at 8:45am(EST)
us-msync.centos.org: 209.40.98.35 rsync: failed to connect to us-msync.centos.org: Connection timed out (110) rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(107) [receiver=2.6.8]
So it still appears to be failing.
