You don't have to be particularly careful with your choice of
desktop environment. I've been using KDE on the Toshiba AC100
(< 512MB of usable RAM) with RedSleeve for years. Use whatever
you are familiar with. Expect disk I/O to be the most limiting
factor if you are running off a USB stick or SD card, random
write performance on nearly all of them is attrocious. A USB
attached HDD will typically be much faster.
