embarrassing to reply to one's own posting ... the lack of success on
the Mac Pro and the Dell Precision was "pilot error" - I installed the
i386 kernel on x86_64 machines !
After fixing this, I find that the new kernel works well on the Dell. I
didn't have time to test the Mac Pro, but the boot messages looked ok on
a quick check.
So - no reason for bug reports.
