i have determined that all the php-pear and php-pecl subpackages are from the extras repo, so they are not compatible with the rhwas stuff. i'm fine with that, but it would probably be nice if somehow those packages in the extra repo knew they were dependent on the base php and would get removed by yum when upgrading to the rhwas versions.
