I think you can be open and honest; he was close but there were some factors in your choice, reveal whatever you feel is relevant. You can also share whatever came in private comments from other mentors if it feels relevant. (There are none that I see but you may have had side discussions.) Ultimately it was best understood as a single project and we didn't have more ways to split it and add him.
