nowadays we and i believe many other ppl are using VPS as mirrors. But there is a little problem with fastest mirror plugin. OpenVZ delays first ping to 100-300ms, all other pings are ok, so average is quite a big, and fastest mirror plugin selects mirror incorrectly. i propose to skip 2-3 maximum ping results and then average to determine best mirror.
