Thisapproach of doing a hot overwrite is essentially not readily attainable , as to the Debian install, and certainly not something which would be common enough to be well documented or tested. It is possible to essentially do a chrooted install in a spare partition, and do the 'fixup' of the bootloader to 'dual boot' between the old and a new OS; I do so on a development box I maintain where it runs either caos-1 or Centos-33 on the same hard drive, (and of course, in the same chassis). I have done recovery work where a person had overlaid RH over top of a Slackware install -- it was a real mess. -- Russ herrold
