What you want is: dig @localhost which queries the nameserver on the local machine to show you some info from the root servers as a useful diagnostic to make sure it can reach them. If you are firewalled in a way that udp on port 53 can't get back from the internet and you aren't configured to use a forwarder that can get answers, you won't see the root servers displayed.
