In reality, it's really about interconnect and the mainboard. Opteron tends to lead in new core design changes, then Athlon 64 follows shortly afterwards. AMD is still perfecting optimizations and packaging with each new revision. You'll always find the Opterons to be of higher quality than the Athlon 64s.
