I used to have to have such problems. Open up a console when logged in init 5 and run kmix. This is the audio related application. Fire up your mic and increase the volume. Perhaps this is the reason why your voice volume is too poor. In case you have not installed KDE, as this is a KDE appa (I think), there shoud be something like this for gnome.
