Not to mention the fact that using FTP (instead of HTTP) will
reduce the ammount of data that needs to be transfered (on the
wire) by 25%.

To transfer a binary file using HTTP, is had to be encoded
using base64, which increases the file size by 1/3.

That, at least, is the theory, and hold true at least on 
HTTP/1.0. I'm not sure if HTTP/1.1 (or some other extension
hacks) makes it possible to transfer binary files without
encoding these days.
