That is because there is no 64-bit version of open office ... I
recommend that if you need anything installed that is i386 (ie,
openoffice ...) that you just use the i386 distro.

The x86_64 distro contains both x86_64 and i386 parts ... and while you
can mix them, it causes issues.  This is especially true if you want to
compile anything on the machine with both 32 and 64 bit files installed.

For workstations, I would recommend i386 installs

That is what I do ... I use x86_64 for server installs and i386 for
workstation installs.
