Thanks. Your suggested technique and another is discussed at
<http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_47_2890.shtm>, which says in part:
The first is to replace the above ulimit command in /etc/profile with
the following:
ulimit -S -c unlimited > /dev/null 2>1
