This sounds suspiciously like problems I've had with fresh Fedora 
installs on some notebooks; the problem is that the ALSA sound mixer has 
channels disabled, or muted, or turned all the way down.

Try popping up 'alsamixer' in a root shell and see if anything in there 
looks like it was messed with.
